Favorite Rain Gear for a Rainy Day Hike


August 6, 2024

The saying goes: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear.”

Rainy days don’t have to ruin your outdoor adventures or time on the trail. With the right rain gear, you can stay dry, comfortable, and ready to take on whatever the weather throws your way. Here’s a comprehensive guide to my favorite rain gear, perfect for any rainy day hike or backpacking trip.

The Best Rain Gear for a Rainy Day on the Trail

START WITH A RELIABLE RAIN JACKET

Regardless of whether you’re backpacking, camping, or going on a day hike, a reliable rain jacket is a necessity to have with you. Depending on the intensity of rain you could encounter, here are my top recommendations:

For light to moderate rain (everything but a downpour):
Rab Kinetic 2.0 Women’s Rain Jacket –
When it comes to rain jackets, the Rab Kinetic 2.0 is a standout piece of gear. This jacket offers a waterproof rating of 10,000mm, making it suitable for moderate rain. I’ve worn this in heavy rain too, I just wouldn’t recommend it for a downpour. What sets it apart is its breathability rating of 35,000 g/m², ensuring you stay dry without overheating. It’s lightweight, packable, and perfect for high-energy hikes.

For heavy, downpour rain:
Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Rain Jacket –
For heavy rain, the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L is my go-to. With a waterproof rating of 20,000mm, it’s designed to withstand serious downpours, and is also impeccable at blocking high winds. The 3-layer system provides excellent protection and durability, so its a jacket that’s sure to last you years to come. It’s also eco-friendly, made with 100% recycled nylon and free from harmful PFAs. The pit zips offer great ventilation, balancing waterproofing with breathability. Just make sure you use them properly and don’t leave them open, as they’re meant for dumping excess heat.

I also have an entire resource on YouTube about Rain Jackets I wish I didn’t purchase, and go into detail on why I love both of these jackets so much.

DON’T FORGET A BACKPACK COVER

Protecting your gear is just as important as keeping yourself dry, especially if you’re on a backpacking trip and you’re carrying your life on your back. The Osprey Rain Cover comes in various sizes to fit different backpacks, ensuring your gear stays safe from the elements. This cover is a must-have for unpredictable weather, and it’s easy to carry and use. In many packs, there will be a designated pocket for the rain cover to go in for quick and easy access.

FOR AREAS WITH HEAVY DOWNPOURS, BRING RAIN PANTS

If you need full-body protection the Rab Downpour Eco Pant is an excellent choice. These are lightweight, packable, and made from recycled materials. And they’re cost comparative to what REI sells, aka they’re a great deal for a very high quality rain pant. They provide reliable protection against rain and wind, making them ideal for any rainy or cold hike. You can learn more about them here.

Why Quality Rain Gear Matters:

STAYING DRY MEANS STAYING SAFE

If you get wet on a hike and can’t get dry enough, it can lead to serious problems such as hypothermia, and is a cause of hiker fatalities annually.

Investing in high-quality rain gear can make a significant difference in your outdoor experience, and keep you safe against the elements. Here are a few key considerations when choosing your rain gear:

  • Waterproof Rating: Look for a rating that suits the conditions you’ll be facing. For mild to moderate rain, look for at least 5,000mm, and for heavy rain, aim for at least 20,000mm.
  • Breathability: Essential for comfort. Features like pit zips and breathable fabrics help prevent overheating.
  • Durability (Denier): Higher denier means more durability, which could be crucial for rugged trails.
  • Packability: Lightweight and packable gear is easier to carry and more convenient, especially when space matters such as on backpacking trips.

Tips for Using Rain Gear Effectively:

PROPER LAYERING, FIT, AND MAINTENANCE
  • Layering: Wear moisture-wicking base layers under your rain gear to stay dry and comfortable.
  • Proper Fit: Ensure your rain gear fits well to maximize its effectiveness and comfort.
  • Maintenance: Regularly clean and reapply DWR (Durable Water Repellent) to your rain gear to maintain its waterproofing. Learn how to properly wash your rain gear here.
